cynical? TOK.
from the few TOK lectures that i've endured over the past few weeks, i've come to the conclusion (as many have before me) that the ultimate answer to life cannot be found. questions remain that baffle great men, stupid men, tall men, short men, fat men and thin men alike (i happen to be a stupid short fat man).
if you've ever tried to break a code, you'll find that it's like trying keys in a lock. in singaporean terms, you just whack. you put forth a hypothesis, and then try it out. if the key fits the lock, then you'll see everything tumble into place and the lock will open. if your method of decoding is correct, the mess of random numbers and letters will magically start to make sense. then comes the "why didn't i see that before!" part where you find yourself so silly for not having seen it before. after you see it, it's hard to un-see it.
isn't like like that?
there are movies in which you may not know what's going on, but toward the end something is revealed and it all makes sense. there are things in life which happen for seemingly no reason. but when you look at the bigger picture, it all makes sense.
TOK has reminded me that seeking purpose in life through secular knowledge is completely pointless. it will never make sense. my approach to decoding it is wrong. no matter how many little bits here and there may make sense, the bigger picture can never be seen.
we've been starting on the book of Ecclesiastes in church. the author (likely King Solomon) shares a similar sentiment about life: everything is meaningless! he's a guy who can tell you, "been there, done that!" he's had the authority, the wealth, the everything. but he, wise as he is, finds it meaningless.
again, looking at life through the wrong lens.
i can know everything about the world, be an expert in all AOKs, yet not find fulfilment. i can have all the wealth and stature in the world, own and head the biggest corporations, yet not find fulfilment. i've been looking at like through the wrong lens. i've been pursuing the wrong things in life due to my incorrect viewpoint.
but once you put God into the equation, everything makes sense. God is the key that opens the lock, because each pin is placed at the correct position. God is the lens through which the enigma that life is appears to makes sense.
God cracks the code.
